Swine flu is an acute and highly contagious respiratory disease of swine caused by the orthomyxovirus thought to be the same virus that caused the 1918 influenza pandemic. The elderly, children and pregnant women are more vulnerable to swine flu. However, lately it has been found that the pandemic seem to have changed the trend.

Some of those who died had no previous medical history and yet developed serious complications and succumbed to the epidemic. Experts continue to maintain that the new H1N1 virus is a mild one yet seven people have died, and at least two of them with no history of any serious illness or chronic condition.

Symptoms:

The best way to prevent deaths is to watch out for the key swine flu symptoms and start the treatment at an early stage.

• Fever with rashes, which is usually high, but unlike seasonal flu, is sometimes absent
• Cough
• Runny nose or stuffy nose
• Sore throat
• Body aches
• Headache
• Chills
• Fatigue or tiredness, which can be extreme
• Diarrhea and vomiting, sometimes, but more commonly seen than with seasonal flu
• Fast breathing or troubled breathing
• Bluish skin colour
• Not taking enough food or fluid
• Becoming irritable

• Isolate affected people, minimise contact for 7-10 days
• Stay at home, away from work, school and public places
• Frequently wash hands with soap
• Use wet cloth for cleaning, dusting
• Use disinfectants for cleaning
• Get plenty of sleep, be physically active
• Drink plenty of fluid, eat nutritious food
• Use face mask or handkerchief while coughing, sneezing
• No handshake, meaning that greets each other as well as visitors, without shaking hands.
• Maintain personal hygiene.
• Practice safe food consumption habits.
• Cover your sneeze and cough in disposable tissues.
• Avoid close contact with wild birds / animals. Stay away from the Zoo.
• As a social distancing measure, avoid close contact with the people having cough and fever.
• Ensure your regular workplace is kept clean.
• Immediately contact physician in case of illness and fatigue or weakness.
