It is mainly because of the huge number of people. I think more people travel in our metro than london tube's. Initially there were sign on the stations that said "Dont move up on the escalators" they removed them and put up these new signs "Stay on the left". Now they have put more sign encouraging people to use stairs :) Making people stand on one side is a challenging task here in Delhi Metro escalators.
